Will A.I. Make Home Automation Obsolete?

We are being told that artificial intelligence is going to change the world. Many people are saying that it will be more disruptive than the internet. This begs the question of “what does this mean for my current top of the line automation?”

Artificial intelligence will be able to use old technology as well as new. Newly developed AI will make decisions and design itself around the existing technology. Any existing home automation will still be effective and useful to any AI that is developed.

Home automation has swept the world by storm. There are an increasing number of Alexas, Google Hubs, and controllable devices in the world.

The concern is that with AI, there is going to be fast advances in technology that will make current things obsolete.

Artificial intelligence can only use things that are connected to the network. AI will be able to learn and embrace different systems into its own abilities. Take a smart light bulb as an example. Artificial intelligence will be able to control a smart bulb because it is connected to the web. Smart bulbs are programmed by humans, but an AI could do much better. Current “Smart Homes” only execute simples sets of preprogrammed actions. Instead of using pre-programmed actions, an AI will make decisions based on what you are doing and your needs.

Replacements make things obsolete, not additions

New technology replaces old technology, making it obsolete.

Although, AI will change the home automation industry in big ways, it will only add to it. Companies like Amazon are working their hardest to make AI work in your home. The goal is to take their existing devices, and make them work smarter.

For example, the Alexa AI program will use all the existing connections to give you a better experience. Alexa, Google, and many others are all looking to develop AI. Whomever gets there first will dominate the market.

Home AI will be amazing

Imagine you have a team of people with the task of operating all of your smart devices.

This team of people watch all of the sensors and cameras to make sure that they are giving you the best experience. They have meetings do discuss the best ways to serve you, and even hire and fire constantly to improve their service.

AI has a goal of serving you. It will design its system around your lifestyle and preferences. It will make assumptions and then act on those assumptions until you tell it not to.

The beauty of personal AI is that it is personal. It will react to your actions, and even make plans for the future to serve you based on patterns you have.

AI will take any technology that you may have, and then use it to help you. AI will design and create new software for each piece of hardware, despite it being older.

Some Devices Will be Obsolete

Although AI will be able to use most devices, there are some issues.

AI will take the place of most software, meaning it will remove any equipment that is there for the sole purpose of running software.

That being said, AI will need a lot of processing power to be effective if it is going to be running locally. Processing requires hardware, meaning any AI will probably take over any available hardware to run its processes.

How to Prepare for A.I.

The first thing we need to understand is that AI will change everything. Additionally, it will come fast.

Once AI gets to be mainstream, things are going to change so fast. Applications for AI are infinite, but there are so many applications in the home that it is going to be one of the first ways it is used by the main population.

Any sort of “smart home” devices are going to be a great way to prepare for AI. Smart bulbs, switches, shades, voice assistants, etc. are all great ways to give eyes and ears to an AI brain.

In order to help you at all, an AI device needs things to change. It needs speakers, microphones, and devices to operate.

Here are the things that will best prepare a home for AI integration:

  • Great internet and wifi support
  • Voice assistants (Alexa, Google, or Siri)
  • Speakers/Amplifiers
  • Displays

Each of these devices will enhance your future experience.

Entertainment

Clear video and distinct sound, all with a seamless look.

Communication

Connection to the internet is critical for our daily lives, and acts as a backbone to all that we do. We leave nothing to chance.

Automation

Shades, lights, garage doors, thermostats, etc. Complete control at your fingertips.

Security

Cameras, locks, motion sensors, doorbell cameras and more all integrated into your phone and computer.
